The state government has confirmed long-term plans for an extension of the Sydney Metro to Kogarah and Miranda.
Two new heavy rail links – between Hurstville and Macquarie Park and between Parramatta and Kogarah – will also be investigated.
The projects are included in the Future Transport Strategy 2056 and supporting infrastructure plans, which the government released on Sunday.
Draft documents were released late last year.
Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance said the 40-year-vision for transport planning in NSW followed widespread community consultation.
Mr Constance said, in the longer term, the government would explore the possibility of a rail link between Hurstville and Macquarie Park via Rhodes.
The government would also iinvestigate rail links between Greater Parramatta with Epping, and Kogarah via Bankstown as part of a 10 -20 year strategy.
“Another feature of the strategy is possible extensions to Sydney Metro, including a line from the CBD to Malabar via Eastlakes and Maroubra Junction and a separate link that would connect Eastlakes with Sydney Airport, Kogarah and Miranda,” he said.
Mr Constance said the state’s transport system already served 7.75 million residents, 800,000 businesses and 30 million visitors.
“By 2056, NSW will have more than 12 million residents and we want to improve public transport and roads so that by 2056, 70 per cent of people live within 30 minutes of where they work or study,” he said.
