Sutherland Shire Council will look at what support it might be able to give to the bushfire ravaged town of Tathra.
Fifty-nine homes were lost when fire swept through the town on the NSW south coast on Sunday.
At their meeting on Monday night, Sutherland councillors agreed to write to Bega Valley Shire Council expressing sympathy and thanking volunteer fire fighters for their efforts in preventing an even worse situation.
The council also decided to set up a working party to see what it and community groups in the shire could do to assist in the aftermath of the disaster.
Cr Steve Simpson, who moved the motion, said the shire had received similar support from overseas and other parts of Australia when it had experienced major bushfires in the past.
Meanwhile, Sutherland Shire residents have inundated the Rural Fire Service with donations for Tathra bushfire victims.
Engadine Rural Fire Service said on Facebook, “Due to the overwhelmingly generous support and goods already received from the community we are putting a hold on further donation unless you have made contact with us already, in which case we will accept these”.
“We are asking that people now hold off until a further assessment of needs of the community is completed.
“We are sorting through everything and packaging up the items to be delivered over the weekend.
“Once again our community can be so proud of its ability to come together and support not only each other, but those far from us also.
“Thank you!”
Earlier, the brigade posted, “We have been so overwhelmed by donations rolling in today and can't thank the community enough.”
