Major road works, which are about to start at key intersections on the Princes Highway between Kirrawee and Gymea, will take about 18 months to complete.
Work will be carried out in four stages, starting early next month (April) and continuing until late 2019.
Crews will operate between 7am and 6pm on weekdays and 8am and 1pm on Saturdays, excluding public holidays and weather permitting.
Traffic control and lane closures will be in place.
Intersections to be upgraded include Acacia Road, Oak Road, Kingsway and President Avenue.
Sutherland Shire MPs Mark Speakman, Eleni Petinos and Lee Evans announced the start of the project, which was the subject of community consultation in 2017.
It is being funded from the state government’s $300 million Gateway to the South Pinch Point Program, which was promised at the 2015 state election.
The MPs said the project was “great news for the thousands of motorists who use the Princes Highway through Kirrawee”, as the work would “improve efficiency and provide more reliable journey times for road users”,
Stage one will involve setting up a site compound and stockpile area, clearing vegetation and installing a new water main and new utilities.
Crews will remove the existing median on the Princes Highway, resurface the road, relocate utilities and widen the existing pedestrian footpath at the intersection of the Princes Highway and Kingsway.
A new median will be built on the western side of the intersection on President Avenue and the southern side of the intersection on the Princes Highway.
The kerb on the eastern side of the intersection on President Avenue will be widened.
Stage two will include widening the road at the intersection of the Princes Highway and Kingsway to allow for the extension of the left turning lane.
Pavement work will be carried out along the footpath at the intersection of the Princes Highway and Acacia Road and access to Kenneth Avenue from the Princes Highway will be permanently closed.
Stage three will involve widening the Princes Highway between Auburn Street and Kingsway, installing a water main and connections, building a retaining wall along the Princes Highway service road between Acacia Road to Oak Road and building a new median on the eastern side of the intersection on President Avenue to improve safety.
Stage four will include building a new median on the Princes Highway between Auburn Street and Kingsway as well as widening the road at the intersection of the Princes Highway and Acacia Road to allow for left turn slip lane which will further improve traffic flow.
