A speech by Labor heavyweight Anthony Albanese was submitted in support of an application by a craft brewer to open a micro-brewery and food and drink premises at Kirrawee.
Sutherland Shire Council approved the application by Sunday Road Brewing to open the micro-brewery in a factory unit in Bath Road, near the brick pit development and opposite The Prince hotel.
The company proposes to brew about 1200 litres of beer a day.
The development application (DA) included a copy of a speech to Parliament by Mr Albanese, who said there were more than 400 craft brewers around Australia. and the industry was “a job creation powerhouse”.
Mr Albanese said there was an inequity in the excise paid by small and large scale brewers.
He urged the federal government “to ensure policy settings which encourage the realisation of the potential of the craft brewing sector” and state and local governments to update their planning controls and development approval to facilitate the growth of the craft brewing sector.
The DA said the proposed micro-brewery would provide “the opportunity for beer tastings, food and other drink sales”.
“It is not proposed to establish a ‘small bar’, however the premises will be licensed appropriately by the Office of Liquor Gaming and Racing,” the DA said.
“Sunday Road Brewing is owned by a local family with a passion for good beer and the local community,” the DA said.
