Cronulla Sharks rugby league captain Paul Gallen has had a very special Assistance Dogs Australia Labrador pup named in his honour.
This furry bundle is about to embark on a journey to become a life-transforming assistance dog of the future and has been named Gallen to honour the Sharks legend’s contributions to Sutherland Shire.
“It’s not often you get asked if you’d like to have a dog named after you,” Paul Gallen said.
“But this little fella has the makings of something very special.
“I hope he’ll go on to change someone’s life one day.”
For many years, the two shire-based organisations have supported one another.
Bestowing the little chocolate Lab with the name of the Sharks co-captain is a gesture of appreciation from the Assistance Dogs Australia to the NRL for its encouragement of the work done by the organisation and its dogs.
The Sharks’ involvement with pup Gallen will continue with regular updates on his journey and career path.
And hopefully one day the Sharks’ captain can perform the official handover of pooch Gallen as a fully qualified Assistance Dog to a future client.
“This little pup has a lot of learning ahead” said CEO of Assistance Dogs Australia Richard Lord.
“But he’s already showing great potential with both Gallens destined to leave a lasting contribution.”
