Richard “Bluey” Garnsey has done so much for other people over many years.
Now, others have a chance to help him and his family in their hour of need by supporting a swim-a-thon being staged by Cronulla Swim Club.
Mr Garnsey, a Sutherland Shire Council lifeguard for 20 years and life member of Cronulla Surf Lifesaving Club, is battling cancer.
A large tumour, along with part of his lung, was removed last year and he is back in hospital fighting yet another complication.
Cronulla Swim Club, which operates out of Caringbah Leisure Centre, is staging the Bluey’s Swim-a-thon fundraiser to provide practical support for Mr Garnsey, his wife Kristie and their son Duke, 10.
Participants and business sponsors are being sought for the event, which will be held on Sunday, April 8, at Caringbah Leisure Centre.
Swimming club vice president Kim Hill said the Garnseys were “a beautiful family, who are doing it tough”.
“Bluey is a coach, son, husband, father and friend, who has volunteered so much of his time to other people,” she said.
“He is the father of one of our awesome swimmers Duke and the club would like to support the family.
“Being the true champion he is, Bluey is fighting every step of the way.
“The financial strain that this illness has caused Bluey and his family including his beautiful wife Kristie and son Duke has been detrimental as Bluey hasn't been able to work and Kristie has taken a lot of time off work to care for the family.”
Ms Hill said a swim-a-thon was a fitting way to raise funds.
“Bluey is a very active person and loves swimming, having competed in many ocean swims in Australia and overseas, and he regularly swims laps at Caringbah Leisure Centre,” she said.
”We are calling on local businesses to support our initiative by donating items for our raffle that we will run and also monetary donations.
“We had more than 100 people register very quickly.”
Ms Hill said people could join an existing surf club or swimming club team or form their own. The cost is $10 per swimmer, including entry and a sausage sandwich.
Swimmers are encouraged to get sponsorship, for example 20 cents per lap.
