The $1 million refurbishment of Sans Souci Leisure Centre will bring the 50-metre pool back to International Swimming Federation standards.
The upgrade, which forms part of Georges River Council’s Aquatic Facilities Refurbishment Program, will look to improve both the 50-metre outdoor swimming pool and the toddler pool.
Work is scheduled to commence in early April and will involve structural concrete repair, joint repair to existing concrete slabs, re-waterproofing and new tiling.
The work is being undertaken under the NSW Government’s Stronger Communities Fund Program.
Dapcor Building Services has been appointed to undertake the refurbishment of the pools.
Georges River Council awarded the tender at its March 26 meeting after hearing from representatives of the Sans Souci Sea Devils Swim Club on the deteriorated standards at the pool including broken down heaters and broken and cracked tiles.
Sans Souci Sea Devils Swim Club president Christi Johnson said the pool urgently needed an upgrade to bring more people back to the much-loved community swimming centre.
“I think we have lost members to other pools since they were upgraded. This will bring many more of the community through the doors,” she said.
The council will provide regular updates to members of the community on the progress of the works and when the 50-metre outdoor swimming pool and toddler pool are expected to reopen in September 2018.
The indoor 25-metre pool and gym will remain open while the works take place.
Georges River Council mayor Kevin Greene, said the works would significantly improve the pools and would bring the 50-metre pool back to FINA (International Swimming Federation) standards.
“Through the State Government’s Stronger Communities Fund, $1 million was allocated to Council’s Aquatic Facilities Refurbishment Program, which will be used to undertake the works to revamp both pools,” Councillor Greene said.
Each of the Kogarah Bay Ward Councillors said they were very excited about the upgrade to the pool.
Councillor Stephen Agius said once the work is completed, members of the community will have two reinvigorated pools to use.
Councillor Nick Katris highlighted that, thanks to the Stronger Communities Fund, Council was able to deliver significant upgrades to local assets and facilities such as the pools at Sans Souci Leisure Centre.
Councillor Leesha Payor said the council wants to ensure that members of the community have first class facilities to enjoy in our local area.
“I look forward to seeing the newly refurbished pools when the works are completed later this year,” she said.
