Menai residents Edina Pavlicz-Wadley and Matt Wadley are encouraging people to open their hearts and homes to greyhounds this month.
April is Adopt a Greyhound Month and the couple, who have owned five greyhounds, say there is lots to love about the breed.
"In 2009, we got our first greyhound Bella to keep our wolfhound company,” Edina said.
“We fell in love with Bella and now probably wouldn’t consider any other breed.
“We then discovered Greyhound Rescue.
“They really took time to find out about us and our circumstances and matched us with Billy. He was a big, beautiful, black male and what a sweetheart!"
Bella and Billy have passed on but Edina and Matt have continued their support of Greyhound Rescue by adopting three more greyhounds - Bonnie, Humphrey and Mr Pickles.
Edina said it didn’t take much time for her greyhounds to feel at home.
“All our greys have adapted well to pet life, just like any other breed. They are always around us and love human company,’’ she said.
Matt said greyhounds are low maintenance, gentle and make great pets for all ages.
“All our greyhounds get along really well,” Matt said.
“They are 70km/h couch potatoes. They seldom bark and only need a half hour walk each day, but are happy to do more.
“They never smell or lose much hair and have never destroyed anything."
Basic training is sometimes needed for rescue greyhounds, many of which haven’t been a pet before.
Edina said while each greyhound has a unique personality but their nature is similar.
“They all have in common an ability to make you laugh and smile, brighten your day and bring a sense of well-being to your household."
Peter Flann, Greyhound Rescue co-founder, said the charity now has more than 50 dogs needing adoption or foster care.
“Adoption costs $250 during April. Normally it’s $350,” Mr Flann said.
“This goes toward the cost of de-sexing, vaccination and a full health check.”
