Westbound lanes of the M5 East motorway are closed due to a truck fire at Kingsgrove earlier today.
A semi-trailer carrying a shipping container burst into flames around noon near Kingsgrove Road.
One of two citybound lanes was also closed for a short time but has since reopened.
Westbound lanes are closed from Marsh Street
Multiple emergency services and traffic crews remain on site, and a lengthy clean up and salvage operation is taking place.
Jenny, a 2GB caller, said the situation did not look good.
“The trees alongside of the M5 are catching fire, there’s big black smoke spewing from it, tyres popping,” Jenny said. “It’s chaos.”
Motorists heading west, are being diverted at Mascot onto the D5 detour route - General Holmes Drive, Bestic Street, West Botany Street, Wickham Street, Forest Road, Stoney Creek Road and King Georges Road.
Motorists were being advised to avoid the area and expect significant delays as traffic was very heavy.
