Three loveable labradors are helping to reduce stress levels at Sutherland Courthouse.
The therapy dogs were introduced this week under the Canine Court Companion Program, which aims to reduce anxiety for vulnerable people, including victims and witnesses.
Volunteers will bring the dogs, trained by Guide Dogs NSW/ACT, to the courthouse on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday each week.
Attorney-General Mark Speakman announced earlier this year a pilot program at Manly Courthouse would be extended to Sutherland and other courts.
“The pilot program received unanimous support with victims of crime, lawyers, court staff and police among those who said they felt more relaxed after patting and chatting to the dogs,” he said.
The dogs are taken into foyers, waiting areas, safe rooms and witness rooms, but not court rooms
Guide Dogs NSW/ACT chief executive Dale Cleaver said, “We know the presence of a dog can help calm people and lower anxiety”.
