SYDNEY'S first suburban community radio station, 2NBC 90.1FM, has been on air for 30 years this year.
To celebrate, the Peakhurst broadcaster has made May its anniversary month.
In the past 30 years, presenter Andrew Drylie has watched the station develop from an old building with two studios into a sophisticated building with four.
"The equipment has been upgraded over the years from reel-to-reel recorders to the computers we use now," Mr Drylie said.
"There has been quite an innovation with the broadcast equipment.
"It is easier [on air], but you have to concentrate more. Radio is like a chess game; you have to think three or four moves ahead."
The station's general manager Paul McGrath said community stations had modernised, and equipment had to be upgraded continuously.
Finances come primarily from donations and fund-raising efforts.
Mr McGrath has worked to improve the content and professionalism.
"Just because we are community radio doesn't mean we are amateur radio," Mr McGrath said.
"I have worked over the years to make sure the presenters are consistent with what the radio station is."
Mr McGrath said 2NBC would have a dinner on May 28 to celebrate its 30th birthday. The station's past and present members are invited.
