MORE than 40 people were evacuated from a Cronulla unit block after a car caught on fire in an underground car park on Friday morning.
Seven fire crews responded to reports of smoke coming from the Gerrale Street car park about 2.45am.
A Fire and Rescue NSW spokeswoman said a car was destroyed by fire and six others were damaged by heat.
One resident said smoke drifted across the road into her apartment for about two hours.
Residents were moved to nearby Rydges Cronulla and returned about 5.30am, the spokeswoman said.
"The first call was to [combat] smoke from the car park; a number of explosions were heard," she said.
