A record 103 whales were spotted on Monday at Cape Solander, Kurnell, on their annual trek north to warmer waters.
Volunteer whale watcher Wayne Reynolds said there was something special about the whale groups counted.
‘‘We had five hours of volunteers being able to watch whales breaching and most of them were humpbacks,’’ Mr Reynolds said.
‘‘Just when we thought there wouldn’t be any more minke whales, two pairs of mums and calves came along.’’
More than 1275 whales have been spotted so far this season from Cape Solander.
