Hurstville mayor Steve McMahon will not be recontesting the next Local Government elections to be held in September.
Cr McMahon, from the Labor faction, has been on council for 13 years, having been elected at 22.
He said it was time he spent more time with his family, focused on his job as the chief executive officer of the NSW Trainers Association, and gained wider life experiences.
‘‘I’ve always been conscious of getting mayors’ disease or councillors’ disease where you start to think that you are more important than you are,’’ he said.
‘‘I need to spend a bit of time out of local politics and see where I fit in the larger scheme of things.
He is not ruling out running for office in the future.
‘‘I intend to spend my remaining five months working hard as mayor to ensure that council is further improving our local community and helping our residents,’’ he said.
