This was the state of Audley last week as captured by Heathcote resident Dennis O’Brien.
Mr O’Brien was shocked by the mess, especially because picnickers had to walk past a bank of bins to return to their cars.
The south-east picnic area near Lady Carrington drive was swamped by empty alcohol cans, napkins, nappies, barbecue leftovers and food scraps, he said.
‘‘It was appalling and it looked ridiculous to have bins 30 metres away,’’ he said.
He said people had tried to put some of the rubbish in a bin liner but cockatoos had picked at the scraps.
‘‘All people walking past were astonished, not so much by the trashing, but by the lack of respect for our beautiful Royal National Park,’’ he said.
‘‘If everyone did this, we would all be knee-deep in rubbish. Rats would be everywhere and we would risk bubonic plague.’’
Mr O’Brien would like to see signs reminding people to pick up after themselves.
How would you solve the problem of rubbish dumping in the Royal National Park?
