A state funeral will be held for former federal MP for Hughes and Sutherland Shire councillor Les Johnson at the Sutherland Entertainment Centre on Wednesday, May 3, at 11am.
He served on Sutherland Shire Council from 1954 to 1956 as a councillor representing the Miranda Riding.
He held the federal seat of Hughes from 1955 to 1966 and from 1969 to 1983 and was federal minister for housing and construction, and then minister for Aboriginal affairs in the Whitlam government.
Mr Johnson was hailed as embodying the spirt of the shire by Sutherland Shire mayor Kent Johns in a mayoral minute expected to be read out at tonight’s council meeting.
‘‘Les Johnson was a very community minded person supporting those less fortunate and the development of services and facilities in the shire,’’ Cr Johns said.
