EWEY Creek at Miranda has been transformed into an example of a healthy urban creek after an extensive rehabilitation.
Highlights included planting 14,700 shrubs and grasses, and reusing the 336 tonnes of excavated material that would have otherwise gone to landfill.
Noxious weeds were removed, and landscaping and flood mitigation measures carried out by Sutherland Shire Council.
The creek travels 2.3 kilometres from near Manchester Road, Gymea, to the western head of Yowie Bay, and drained a catchment area of 165 hectares, said a council spokeswoman.
Urban creeks were under pressure from urban development, said mayor Kent Johns.
"These factors can lead to urban flooding, environmental degradation, sedimentation, water pollution, general loss of amenity, depressed land values and reduced opportunities for future generations, so it's vital that our creeks are monitored closely," he said.
