St George District Athletic Club’s Grace Robinson (pictured) won the gold medal in the women’s shot put with a personal best at the Samoa 2015 Youth Commonwealth Games on Wednesday.
The Penshurst girl threw 16.39 metres, her previous best was 16.25 metres, at the six-day event which finishes in Apia, Samoa on Friday.
She is an accomplished young athlete winning many events in major competition and in 2013 was named the Leader-Tynan Honda Junior Sportstar of the Year.
Grace, 16, produced the superb throw to win gold against a talented field of entrants. England’s Sophie Merritt (15.78 metres) won silver and India’s Anamika Das (15.03 metres), the bronze.
‘‘I was just aiming for a personal best and it happened,’’ Grace said.
‘‘I was so happy with my performance.’’
Her father, Chris, is her coach.
Previously St George District Athletic Club’s long-time member Ray Russell coached the discus and shot put thrower.
Grace is a student at Bethany College, Hurstville.
