SUTHERLAND Shire Council will nominate former mayor Kent Johns for the honorary title of Emeritus Mayor.
Councillor Johns was nominated by his former deputy, fellow Liberal councillor and new mayor Carmelo Pesce, who was elected last week.
The title is awarded by Local Government NSW (LGNSW), the peak industry association that represents the interests of all NSW councils.
To qualify for the title Emeritus Mayor a councillor must have served a minimum of three one-year terms as mayor.
While Cr Johns only served two terms as Sutherland Shire mayor he was also elected Rockdale mayor in 1999.
Cr Johns was first elected to Sutherland Shire Council in 2004.
In 2008, as Liberal team leader, he disbanded the Liberal party team and the councillors were independents until the end of the term.
He was first elected Sutherland Shire mayor in 2012, serving one term, before becoming mayor again in 2014.
He served as Rockdale mayor under Labor in 1999 before he resigned from the Labor Party in 2002 to become an independent.
