Historically you know its summer when the air is alive with the sound of Cicada’s.
At Cronulla beach it's the sound of the ‘‘Crays‘‘ that herald the glorious summer season with the 2016 Nipper season officially under way on Sunday, October 11.
Nippers is a junior program that introduces children aged 5 to 13 to surf lifesaving, and the Cronulla Crays took the opportunity to celebrate the start of the season with a ‘Go Cronulla’ message, formed on the sand by around 600 Nippers before starting their weekly Sunday program of surf and beach events.
The event was inspired by the recent ’Get Well Glenn’ formed in the sand at Elouera beach a few months ago for TV and radio personality Glenn Wheeler.
Cronulla Crays age manager, and part of the organising team for both events, Rob Stanley-Jones said: ‘‘A lot of people were inspired by what we did for Glenn, so it was nice to be able to do it again, for a different reason, on another beautiful day in the Shire’’
Brendan Abbott from Impact Aerials provided the drone footage following all the protocols required and no Nippers were harmed in the filming.
