The northern end of the Rockdale shopping strip is seeing a resurgence with a new $62 million development planned opposite the Rockdale Library.
The Anew Rockdale development is a mix of residential and retail with two interconnecting, oversized lobbies.
It will include a number of one, two and three bedroom apartments as well as retail spaces on the ground floor.
A display suite will open to the public on August 6 with a VIP launch planned for August 20.
Construction will begin in early 2017 with completion expected in early 2019.
However not all of Rockdale is booming.
A Target spokesman said at the time that the store had been underperforming for some time and was no longer financially viable to continue trading.
Property group CBRE has been working to lease the property since Target moved out.
The Australian Electoral Commission signed a short term lease at the site but agents are still trying to lease the site longer term.
It’s not the only empty store in along the strip.
When the Leader visited recently a number of shops were also vacant in the arcade leading to the former Target site.
Rockdale Chamber of Commerce President Allan Wight said the business community in the Rockdale town centre were doing it tough.
He said current businesses needed to embrace the changes and seek relationships and opportunities with the new developments.
He is calling for more infrastructure development to shift traffic through the centre and extra parking to help improve the area.
What kind of stores would you like to see in the Rockdale town centre?
