Rural fire brigades across the Sutherland Shire will open their doors this weekend ahead of the upcoming bushfire season.
As part of the Get Ready weekend volunteer firefighters will be holding events and activities around the region giving residents the chance to talk about what they can do to prepare for bushfires. Sutherland Shire Rural Fire Service Inspector Scott Deller said that all residents need to be prepared for the bush fire season.
“Regardless of the weather we have to endure over the coming season, now is the time to get ready,’’ he said.
“This winter has seen rainfall totals higher than average, limiting the opportunity for hazard reduction burning.
“It only takes a few weeks of dry weather for bush fires to become problematic.
“There are many events planned in our area, including firefighting displays, opportunities to get aboard a fire truck or fire boat, take a picture with a firefighter and see some of their specialist equipment.
“Preparing for bushfires is easier than people may think. It could be as simple as talking to your family about what you would do if a bush fire was to start near them.’’
Local Bunnings stores are also hosting volunteer firefighters and displays so people can talk to them about the simple things they can do to reduce their bush fire risk.
