RESIDENTS in the Sutherland Shire are urged to start preparing for the upcoming bush fire season.

Residents are invited to join NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) personnel for Get Ready Weekend on September 10 and 11.

Now is the time to get ready for the threat of bush fire.

Fire fighters from more than 450 brigades across NSW will conduct a range of events and activities this weekend to help people prepare for the fire season.

The RFS has provided the following tips for bush fire preparation:

  1. Trim overhanging trees and shrubs.
  2. Mow your lawn and remove all the cuttings.
  3. Remove material that can burn around your home (e.g. door mats, wood piles, mulch, leaves, paint, outdoor furniture).
  4. Clear and remove all the debris and leaves from the gutters surrounding your home.
  5. Prepare a hose or hoses that can reach all around the house.
