Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club expects to complete the redevelopment of its clubhouse by the end of 2019 after securing a $3 million federal government grant.
Federal Treasurer and Cook MP Scott Morrison announced the grant to match funds already raised by the club, including loans and support from Sutherland Shire Council.
“It means the project is now fully funded and can proceed,” he said.
We must respect the building and club’s unique historical heritage significance.

Mr Morrison said the surf club building had been in urgent need of redevelopment to ensure it complied with building and safety standards and could meet community needs into the future.
“In its 76 year history, the club has seen four major works programs, creating many issues including non-compliance with OH&S and limited or non-existent disabled access,” he said.
“As a result, any refurbishment subsequently comes with a large number of demands, constraints and additional costs and why it led club president Rob Short to seek help from the federal government.
“Unlike other clubs, Cronulla is restricted in building outside its perimeter on the Esplanade.
“We must respect the building and club’s unique historical heritage significance.”
Mr Morrison said the club had protected the community since 1908 and the iconic building, which was “synonymous with the shire’s landscape” was 76 years old.
“The core building is of major heritage significance and has many aspects which must be preserved or even restored to their earlier condition.
“This is what makes this project unique and why it has attracted specific support from the Australian Government.”
A development application for the project was approved by the regional planning panel late in 2016.
Part of the existing, three storey building will be demolished and rebuilt with a range of new facilities, a lift and new entry.
The ground floor will include new boat, ski and board storage areas, female and male amenities and a gym.
Level one will have a new lounge, bar, terrace, kitchen, toilets and function room, while level two will feature a new entrance from Cronulla Park, office space, lift, lobby and mezzanine.
