THE SANDHILLS
The sand dunes that once stretched the full length of the Kurnell peninsula have long been a playground for Sutherland Shire residents.
They have also provided a setting for the movies Forty Thousand Horsemen in 1940 and Mel Gibson’s Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome in 1985.
All the while, the dunes have been slowly disappearing as sand mining has been carried out to meet building and construction needs throughout Sydney, with protests over development plans for the excavated land.
