FLASHBACK FRIDAY | Photos from the Leader’s archives

There were amazing scenes when Barry Manilow visited Westfield shopping centre in Hurstville in 1994

Thousands of fans of the singer-songwriter superstar packed the three levels of the complex to catch a glimpse of their idol, with some lucky enough to get autographs.

Manilow took time out to visit Hurstville while performing three shows at the Sydney Entertainment Centre during his Greatest Hits Tour of Australia.

On the opening night he had a special girl on stage as he sang his signature hit, Can’t Smile Without You.

When the house lights went up, there was Dame Edna Everage, resplendent in sequins and wearing a lilac wig.

It was Manilow’s second concert series in Sydney. In 1983 he did the entire show to open the Sydney Entertainment Centre.

In 2006, Manilow made a comeback of sorts in St George.

Rockdale Council gained wordlwide publicity with a decisiion to play his music through loudspeakers to deter hoons from gathering in Hasham’s car park in Kyeemagh.
