Tyson Condor is the boy with the golden gloves.

Tyson, from Gymea Bay, represented the NSW junior representative team at the Australian Golden Glove championships in Brisbane earlier this month.

The 12-year-old won the 54-kilogram 0-3 fights division in what was his first ever boxing tournament.

Tyson’s coach at Sutherland PCYC, Sean Fitzpatrick, has been training the young southpaw for two years and believes there is plenty to be excited about.

“I think in the next two or three years you could see him develop into an Australian champion,” Fitzpatrick said.

“He’s a really talented kid. In NSW you can’t fight in a proper bout until you’re 14 which makes things more difficult for my kids. We try to help them stay active with things like inter-club sparring.

“The kid [Tyson] fought in the final wasn’t a bad kid either. He’d had three fights and was two years older than him. He did really well. It was a really good win for him first up. He’s a real talent.”

The Golden Gloves are a prestigious tournament held north of the border for almost 500 fighters.

Fitzpatrick said he was working on securing Tyson more bouts in Queensland and the ACT where boxers can fight from the age of 10. From there, Tyson has his eye on the national titles in Victoria next year.

It has been a good month for Fitzpatrick’s fighters, with five of his Sutherland PCYC-based boxers winning gold medals at the NSW Open state championships held at Mittagong PCYC.

Jarrod Kosorukow won the junior male 50kgs division while Jarred El Hassan won the junior male 63kg division.

Jacob Sheridan (57kg), Logan Walker (60kg) and Bradley Collins (youth 49kg) all secured walkover victories in their respective divisions.

Another shire product, Jayden Heyward, took out the 75kg elite male division.

Heyward also won the 75kg division at the Australian Amateur Boxing League novice titles on the Central Coast earlier this year.
