The Tynan family have plenty of motivation when it comes to supporting medical research.
Well-known Sutherland Shire businessman and former mayor Michael Tynan died last year, following battles with lung and brain cancer, while his wife Annette lost three sisters to cancer.
Daughter Madeline Tynan said supporting medical research was a major focus of the 2nd Michael Tynan Memorial Challenge being held on Saturday, November 11.
“Last year’s event was so dominated by dad, and that is why people supported it,” she said. “This year we are wanting people to walk in memory of loved ones whom medical research could have saved, and to keep them in their hearts.”
The Michael Tynan Memorial Challenge will feature a seven to eight hour walk from Otford to Bundeena on November 11. Participants can either take part in the trek through the Royal National Park or complete a driving challenge to raise money for the St George and Sutherland Medical Research Foundation (SSMRF).
The inaugural event raised over $500,000 for SSMRF.
Madeline said funds raised this year would help the foundation with gut research, following the opening of the Microbiome Research Centre at St George Hospital.
