Construction of Australia’s newest and largest offshore artificial reef complex, located near the entrance to Port Hacking has been completed.
The reef is in a sandy area about 2.5 kilometres south-south-east of Jibbon Point in 30 metres of water (see the video below).
A Department of Primary Industries map shows the reef in two sections, identified as northern and southern components.
It will be known as J D Reef in honour of John Dunphy, a tackle industry pioneer and national fishing industry “giant”.
A plaque in memory of Mr Dunphy, who died in 2015, will be unveiled at the Royal Motor Yacht Club Port Hacking on Friday, November 24, at 6.30pm.
The JD reef complex consists of 36 concrete modules, each weighing 25 tonnes and standing five metres high, which were lowered into position in October.
The Department of Primary Industries says “this great fishing asset is designed to produce fish for many decades, creating a high value fishing location for current and future generations of recreational fishers in the southern Sydney region”.
