Tony Lopes heads South of Sydney for latest exhibition

Lopes’ latest works, South of Sydney, officially launched at Moran Gallery Sylvania on December 6 and will be open until January 28.

Sylvania resident Lopes was inspired by the landscape photographer’s dream that is a road trip to Sydney’s south, from the sculptural headlands and awe-inspiring beaches to the waterways and clear light.

South of Sydney includes photos of Cronulla Beach, the Royal National Park and Wanda Beach.

Editor of Artist Profile magazine Kon Gouriotis, who acted as guest speaker at the official opening of the exhibit, said Lopes’ photos imagined a world isolated from any individual.

“The sky, water and land blend together, uninterrupted by human presence, devices or transporters,” he said. 

“These photographs resemble distant yet familiar places, an Australia beyond our local reach. However, they are all photographed near his home in the Sutherland Shire.”

Lopes has been a freelance photographer for more than 20 years. He has experience in all aspects of traditional photography and earned a diploma in fine arts majoring in photography at St George College.

Lopes worked for esteemed Sydney portrait studios Divinity and Photografos before starting his own company, Euphoria Photography.

Lopes said he hoped visitors to the exhibition found the works inspiring and that they evoked “wonderful memories that allow you to lose yourself in this narrative.”

“While I’ve taken many ambitious trips around Australia and abroad, it is the beauty of familiarity and understanding of the landscape of home that has continued to charm my goal of capturing this region,” Lopes said.

“It’s the unexpected natural features and vistas of this landscape that continually challenge my concept of what a good photograph could be. Just letting go and adapting to this visual treasure trove becomes an art in itself.”

Entry is free between 10am and 4pm daily.
