Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club has secured another grant to help with a $6.5 million redevelopment of the clubhouse, which is due to start in 2018.
Cronulla MP and Attorney-General Mark Speakman announced the state government would provide $350,000 from the $4 million 2017-18 Surf Club Facility Program.
“This funding will help the club to upgrade its clubhouse so that it can continue its vital work in servicing the community,” he said.
“The new training facilities will also ensure the club continues to develop our future lifesavers.”
In April this year, federal Treasurer and Cook MP Scott Morrison announced a federal government contribution of $3 million, while Sutherland Shire Council is providing $1 million.
Formed in 1907, the club is one of the longest serving surf life saving bodies in Australia.
It is also the longest serving community organisation in Sutherland Shire.
Mr Speakman said members and supporters had worked tirelessly to raise funds for the redevelopment of the heritage-listed building.
Club president Richard Pinker said the redevelopment project had been seven years in the planning, and construction was expected to start in May, 2018, at the end of the surf patrol season.
“The club will provide a modern surf life saving facility while respecting the historical significance of the current building,” he said.
“Importantly, it will bring the building into compliance with modern building standards.
“A project of this nature cannot occur without support.
“The funding received from the state government will ensure that the project is completed on time and achieve all the project objectives,” he said.
A development application for the project was approved by the regional planning panel in late 2016.
Part of the existing, three-storey building will be demolished and rebuilt with a range of new facilities, a lift and new entry.
The ground floor will include new boat, ski and board storage areas, female and male amenities and a gym.
Level one will have a new lounge, bar, terrace, kitchen, toilets and function room, while level two will feature a new entrance from Cronulla Park, office space, lift, lobby and mezzanine.
