Former Hurstville Council mayor, Mervyn Lynch has died as the age of 86.
Mr Lynch served as Hurstville Council mayor in 1991-1992, and deputy mayor in 1985 to 1986, 1990 to 1991 and 1999 to 2000.
He was chairman of Hurstville Council’s Senior Citizens Management Committee and was involved for many years with the Hurstville Seniors Computer Club where he was patron.
He was also patron of 3Bridges Community and was involved for many years with the Illawarra Catholic Club.
Georges River Council mayor Kevin Greene, said he was saddened to hear of Mr Lynch’s passing.
“Merv served on the former Hurstville City Council for over 20 years as a Councillor from 1980 until 2004,” Cr Greene said.
“During his time with Council, he also served as Mayor from 1991 to 1992.
“Outside of Council, Merv was a very active member of the local community having been involved with the Illawarra Catholic Club, and even as a President and life member of the St George District Junior Rugby League Club.
“His service to the community saw him recognised in the 2007 Australia Day Honours List where he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to local government, and to the local community through aged care, sporting and church groups.
“Merv’s presence in the local community and especially the suburb of Penshurst will be truly missed.
“I wish to express my condolences to Mervyn’s family during this difficult time,” he said.
A Mass service will be held at St Declan's Catholic Church, Penshurst on Friday, January 12 at 1.30pm, followed by a service at Woronora General Cemetery.
