A football club in Oyster Bay will be hoping for a goal-fest when Sydney FC take on Central Coast Mariners.
Georges River FC in Oyster Bay has won a competition run by Hyundai, called Goals for Grassroots, which helps junior clubs across Australia.
Sydney FC players Aaron Calver, Rhyan Grant and Anthony Kalik ran a clinic at the club last Thursday as part of the club’s prize. About 30 children (aged 5-12) took part while Fox Sports filmed the clinic to promote Goals for Grassroots.
The club will be donated $1000 plus a further $1000 for every goal Sydney FC score against Mariners on Saturday, January 20. The club have also received 20 free tickets to the game.
During each A-League round, a different junior club is selected as the winner of the enviable prize.
Georges River FC publicity officer Melissa Gassman put her club’s name forward for the competition.
She said it was great to have some of the first team players from Sydney FC down at their club, including local lad Calver who is from the shire.
She added money donated to the club would go toward improving their playing fields.
“Our big focus is to improve our pitch. Our playing fields are not up to scratch so it will go toward our field fund.”
She said everyone at the club was hoping for a goal-fest this Saturday.
Registrations are now open for junior football online through www.playfootball.com.au.
