The Russian Musical Theatre Musicon will present a special production, 8 Women, this weekend at the Sutherland Memorial School of Arts.
Musicon is presenting the production to cater for the shire’s large Russian community but everyone is welcome.
It tells the story of a wealthy businessman who is murdered in his isolated home days before Christmas leaving the eight females in the house, his servants, wife and mistress, as suspects.
The non for profit community association Sydney Russian Musical Theatre Musicon is the first Slavic musical theatre in Australia.
It was founded in November 2015 by the artistic director Edouard Gadaev, who has a solid background in producing opera and experience from Bolshoy Theatre in Moscow, Australia’s National Opera Company, Rockdale Opera Company in Sydney.
“Although our musical will be performed in Russian language we will make it suitable for English speaking audience by providing English language subtitles,” Russian Musical Theatre Musicon president, Milada Kondratieva said.
“We've just finished working on our first project - the musical “8 Women” based on the famous French play by Robert Thomas with the music written by an outstanding Russian Soviet composer Alexander Zhurbin, who composed music for more than 60 movies and musicals.
“Some of Zhurbin's musicals were played on Broadway stages in NYC. Our musical consists of two acts, three hours total duration and includes 26 songs and 15 dances.
“All the scenery and choreography are original, made by the artistic director and choreographers of our theatre.”
The musical "8 women" will be shown at 2pm, Sunday, February 11 at Sutherland Memorial School of Arts, 25 East Parade, Sutherland.
