A MAKESHIFT hatchet and a serrated hunting knife were among weapons Corrections NSW pried away from visitors heading into Cessnock Correctional Centre during a weekend crackdown.
The specialised Security Operations Group and police charged five visitors, turning seven away. Assistant Commissioner for Security and Intelligence Mark Wilson said the items were retrieved from the cars of visitors.
“Visitors need to use some common sense and ensure that they are not driving into a correctional facility with a boot full of hunting knives or anything else that is considered contraband in the custodial setting such as tobacco,” he said.
Police also found 54 grams of cannabis, two grams of methamphetamine, 21 syringes, the axe, the hunting knife, two pocket knives and 21 syringes.
