Kate Fitzsimons has been named the 2018 Cronulla Woman of the Year.
The honour for Ms Fitzsimons, 25, was announced on International Women’s Day by Cronulla MP and Attorney-General Mark Speakman.
Ms Fitzsimons’s sister, Nicole, a talented dancer and sports journalist, was killed in a motorbike accident in Thailand In 2012.
The following year, Kate gave up her career to become the director of the Nicole Fitzsimons Foundation, founded by her family.
The foundation aims to educate young people on the importance of overseas travel safety and also provides talented and dedicated young performing artists and sportspeople with financial assistance.
Mr Speakman said Ms Fitsimons had delivered presentations to nearly 50,000 senior school students.
“Kate’s hard work and commitment to positively influencing young people made her an outstanding candidate for the award,” he said.
Local Women of the Year Awards are given in each state electorate to acknowledge women who are making a significant impact in their area.
Previous Cronulla Women of the Year are:
- Alison Todd, 2017, volunteer work with Cancer Council.
- Jen Armstrong, 2016, establishing The Beauty Bank. Ms Armstrong was also 2016 NSW Woman of the Year.
- Megan Barnes, 2015, raising awareness of pancreatic cancer.
- Karen Crawley, 2014, raising awareness of mitochondrial disease.
