A new $1.5 million water fun park to be installed at Sutherland Leisure Centre is expected to be ready by next summer.
Sutherland Shire Council has awarded a tender to Queensland based company Beau Corp Projects for the design and construction of the facility.
The council said the water park would be “a dynamic mix of slides and fountains to suit a range of ages and abilities”.
“It will be supervised by a lifeguard and is expected to be ready for the 2018/2019 summer season.
“Access to the new water fun park will be included in the leisure centre’s standard entry fee with a discounted family rate of $25.50.
“The water fun park is also expected to be self-sustaining in its building and running costs, due to the anticipated increase in patrons this unique space will bring.”
The facility, covering 500 square metres, will be built over the existing grass area in the north-western corner of the leisure centre.
Construction is due to begin next month.
The council said it would open “during the warmer months of the year, approximately September to April, with exceptions to be made for warm and sunny days outside of that period”.
It would include “safe slides, water fountains and play equipment to suit children of all ages and abilities and will also feature integrated shade structures and seating”.
Maximum water depth would be 30 centimetres, the council said.
Mayor Carmelo Pesce said the facility was “set to become the number one attraction for family fun and for keeping the kids entertained” and “will tick all the boxes”.
“It will provide a safe and exciting new space to spend your weekends, school holidays or even for hosting birthday parties,” he said.
The council surveyed residents in 2015 about water fun parks and other improvements for its leisure centres.
An expansion of gym and fitness facilities was also suggested , as an option for Sutherland Leisure Centre.
Respondents were also asked whether Engadine Leisure Centre should get a water play area and have its outdoor program pool enclosed.
Gym and fitness facilities were suggested as options at Menai Indoor Sports Centre.
