In the Leader (March 7) we read of the 9 and 10-storey development planned for construction opposite Cronulla Beach.
Given the size and location of the development there are going to be considerable traffic disruptions during construction.
Sutherland Shire Council has stated that ‘‘the site has access from Surf Lane, so Gerrale Street won’t be the main construction access to the site’’, but Surf Lane is used by retail store and cafe suppliers for daily deliveries of stock.
These trucks currently have restricted access because of the lane width!
Access to the site from Gerrale Street for demolition of the existing apartment blocks, earth excavation equipment, trucks removing soil and rock, delivery trucks supplying timber, steel, plaster board plus concrete pumping equipment and concrete mixers won’t just require the one parking lane.
The time has arrived for the council to make the necessary road changes at Cronulla so that the residents come first not the developers!
Twelve months ago, council received a plan to create a loop road plan for Cronulla to free up traffic but to date, the residents have seen nothing.
For a popular beachside suburb to have a main access road with one lane in each direction is less than desirable. However, to have a major building construction in that road can only result in considerable delays, particularly when the road leads to a popular beach!
Come on Sutherland Shire Council make the necessary road changes to ease traffic congestion around Cronulla.
