The relocation to a brand-new facility in the East Quarter Development on Forest Road is one of the recent changes that will benefit patients, said Dr Tess Huynh, a cataract, refractive and corneal surgeon at Vision Eye Institute Hurstville. “When our clinic was established over 30 years ago, it was one of the first ophthalmic day surgeries in Australia. Since then, our team has performed eye surgery on more than 45,000 patients. To continue to give our patients access to the highest standard of eye care, we’ve moved into new state-of-the-art premises that include a comprehensive ophthalmology consulting practice, a laser vision correction suite and a fully equipped day surgery on-site.”
There have also been changes to the clinic team, with the addition of Dr Patrick Versace, a laser eye surgeon who has practised at Vision Eye Institute Bondi Junction for more than 20 years. “I’ll be working alongside Dr Tess Huynh to offer patients the full range of vision correction procedures, so that each patient has a treatment that is tailored to their individual needs and circumstances, to ensure the best visual outcomes,” said Dr Versace.
In addition to being home to a state-of-the-art laser suite, Vision Eye Institute Hurstville has a team of world-class doctors who specialise in cataract surgery, glaucoma and retinal and corneal conditions.
The clinic team also caters to the changing demographics of the local area. “The area has certainly changed a lot in recent years. “We try to respond accordingly with our services and offer comfort to many patients through the diversity of our team. Languages spoken by our various doctors include English, Cantonese, Mandarin and Vietnamese,” said Dr Huynh. Dr Jason Cheng, an ophthalmologist, speaks fluent Cantonese and basic Mandarin, says that patients appreciate being able to speak to their doctor in their first language. “Many of my Chinese patients who are fluent in English still prefer to have their consultation in their mother tongue as it puts them at ease. We have responded to this demand and are happy to have another Mandarin speaker, Tony Teng, join the team as a clinical optometrist.” As a glaucoma specialist, Dr Jason Cheng says it is especially beneficial to local patients that the clinic can provide the full range of glaucoma treatments on-site. “Our local Hurstville area has a large Asian population and angle-closure glaucoma is much more common in this population, especially in elderly Asian women. Although this condition is less common than the open-angle form of glaucoma, it is more likely to cause blindness. We have the latest technology to detect glaucoma earlier and are therefore able to start treatment before there is vision loss.”
