Hospital memories
Re the article “Sutherland Hospital’s 60th” (Leader, April 4).
My mum's bike is against the tree. She is the one with her hands on her hips.
She was 15 and grew up in Caringbah and rode her bike up the road to see the opening.

Loved the old hospital with the verandahs on all 4 floors.
I had my children there on the 3rd floor in the early 80's lovely memories.

I remember the wishing well with coloured blue water outside the kiosk in the grounds. The grounds had a relaxing feel back then.

I started there in 1996 as a fresh out of school baby nurse, on the old 4west and 4west extension.
I loved the old hospital, I remember sitting out on the verandahs of afternoon shift for dinner and watching all the city lights turn on.
And on the really hot days opening all the windows to let all the air flow through. Nursing has changed so much!

It’s a pity they couldn’t keep the facade in the hospital’s rebuild, it was an iconic part of the shire.
Now it almost looks like nothing’s there.

I was there on the day of the opening.
Thirteen years later I had my 1st child there, my 2nd child was born the following year.
Twenty-one years later my 1st grandchild was born there and 5 years after that my granddaughter was born there.

I remember the hospital fete held each year there in what was the front car park alongside the canteen.
All the shire auxiliary’s had their own little stalls set up. My mum was the president of the Gymea Bay Hospital Auxillary.
I can remember making toffees to sell at their stall. That was over 50 years ago.
They use to have a local brass band playing there as well on the day.
