Following the popularity of their recent open days, the Illawarra Beekeepers will once again be opening their hive doors to the community on May 5.
The open day will include live hive inspections where adults and children will be able to suit up in protective clothing and take a closer look inside a working bee hive.
It is a great opportunity for shire residents to visit the Bee Gardens behind the Sutherland Leisure Centre and learn all about the importance of honey and native bees.
Illawarra Beekeepers junior member Jasper Darlow said the best thing about bees is the honey.
“Bees are fantastic and I have a honey sandwich everyday for lunch,” Jasper said.
Informative talks on beekeeping, the life of a worker bee and native bees, will also be held throughout the day with kids corner the most popular,where the children big and small, can learn about the important role of bees in our community.
Stalls with honey tastings and sales, beeswax candles, eco wax wraps, lip balm, plants, books on beekeeping along with tea, coffee with homemade cakes and slices all provided by club members, as well as the always popular BBQ sausage sizzle and cold drinks are available.
There will be regular information sessions at the top of each hour from 10am to 2pm and raffles will also be held with prizes including a beekeeping course for beginners (value $299), honey hampers, books and lots lots more on the day.
