Want to release some stress?
Welcome to Sydney’s first Smash Room – call it four-walls of madness – but in a good way, say the guys who launched the idea at Kogarah.
Armed with a baseball bat, gloves and a face mask, the idea is to take a swing at anything and everything in your sight.
For $40, each person gets 10 minutes to destroy a crate of breakable items including glass bottles, crockery, and even the odd office printer or washing machine, to the beat of loud tunes in the background.
There is even a mystery box that can include toasters or television screens.
It is filmed so people can post their smashable sessions online.
Situated in the back streets of an industrial part of the suburb, the room is the creation of friends Russell Dunn, 33, and Johnny Li, 32, also known as the Smash Brothers.
The digital marketers set up the Kogarah site after seeing how successful it was in other states.
“We started researching it and when we mentioned it to our family and friends, it snowballed from there,” Mr Dunn said.
“We’ve got capacity for 96 and we’re getting more than 50 people on a single day – from all over Sydney, and even Canberra.”
He says the purpose is to have fun, mixed in with a bit of therapeutic release.
“It’s up to people what they want to take out of it,” Mr Dunn said.
“It’s a great workout but most people say they feel better afterwards. Others just enjoy themselves.
“We don’t promote violence against people. Some people ask if they can put up a picture of their boss or a mannequin but that’s not what we’re about.”
The pair source their breakable items from Gumtree, eBay and restaurants.
Everything gets recycled.
“We clean it up with a couple of shovels and we’ve teamed up with Bingo, a waste management company. They take the mess away turn it into alternative use.”
The Smash Room is open Friday 6.30pm-10pm; Saturday and Sunday 10am-6.30pm.
