Basketball was a big winner when state government grants were handed out this week to 26 Sutherland Shire sports clubs and associations.
Sports Minister Stuart Ayres visited the Sutherland District Basketball Association stadium to announce a $18,700 grant to provide an electronic scoreboard, seating upgrade and training program for volunteer coaches.
Mr Ayres also personally delivered the news of a maximum grant of $20,000 to St Joseph’s Junior Rugby League Club (“Joeys”) for the a fence around Kareela Oval.
He also visited Kirrawee Kangaroos Football Club and Sylvania Bowling Club to make announcements.
State MPs Lee Evans (Heathcote) and Eleni Petinos (Miranda) accompanied the minister.
The grants are provided under the 2017/18 Local Sport Grant Program.
Each state electorate receives about $50,000, with MPs recommending how the funding should be allocated after applications are made by sporting bodies.
One of the largest sporting bodies, Sutherland Shire Netball Association, received the smallest grant, of $875 for umpire development.

- Sutherland District Cricket Club, $13,221 for Tonkin Oval playing surface upgrade.
- Cronulla Sharks Boardriders Club, $5000 for uniforms and equipment.
- Sydney South Hockey Association, $5000 for hockey goals.
- North Cronulla Junior Boardriders Club, $4999 for uniforms and equipment.
- Cronulla Sutherland Kayak Club, $4000 for paddles and shade tent.
- Sharks International Water Polo academy, $4000 for uniforms and equipment.
- Wanda Surf Lifesaving Club, $3500 for community surf carnival.
- Cronulla Sailing Club, $2,300 for uniforms and equipment.
- Cronulla Sutherland Water Polo Club, $2000 for coaching development and pathways program.
- Cronulla-Sutherland District Junior Rugby Football League, $4000 for safety fencing along storm water channel.
- Woolooware Golf Club, $1980 for sport trainer courses for affiliated clubs.
MIRANDA
- St Joseph’s Junior Rugby League Club (“Joeys”), $20,000 for a fence around Kareela Oval.
- Kirrawee Kangaroos Football Club, $12,000 for the installation of a roller shutter system to improve security and weatherproofing for their clubhouse.
- Sylvania Bowling Club, $5000 to upgrade existing shade canopies and purchase new club uniforms.
- Sydney Central Badminton Association, $5000 for uniforms, equipment and registration fees.
- Como Jannali Junior Rugby League Football Club, $3000 for the Scylla Bay League Tag Gala Day.
- Port Hacking Little Athletics Centre, $2000 for mobile recording devices.
- St George and Sutherland Shire Giants Baseball Club, $2000 for protective gear for umpires.
- Sutherland Shire Netball Association, $875 for umpire development.
