This time of the year is the perfect time for catching mullet along large stretches of the the NSW coast in what is happily known in the fishing world as the “mullet run”.
Big schools of mullet which stay very close to the shore make easy pickings for fishermen equipped with nets.
They also provide a thrilling spectacle for those surfers and swimmers who get close enough to the swarming mass of fish.
Leader photographer John Veage was down at Wanda Beach on Tuesday afternoon when he saw a "mullet run" in full swing: scores of fish making their way north.
"I haven't seen a mullet run in Sydney for years," Veage said. "It was school holidays, it kept the kids amused."
There weren't any sharks spotted nearby, but John Taylforth of Fergo's World Taren Point said he wouldn't be in the water when there were such a huge amount of fish so close to the shore.
"They could be big schools of mullet or big schools of salmon," he said. "It will look like a shadow but then you will see it's actually changing shape."
Mr Taylforth said the numbers of fish have been increasing, which was good news for fishermen.
