Hundreds gathered at Memorial Park outside the Kingsgrove RSL Club this morning for the 2018 Anzac Day service service honouring the service and sacrifice of the Australian and New Zealand armed services personnel.
This year’s service had added significance with 2018 marking the centenary of the end of WWI.
The service was preceded by a march led by the Kingrove RSL Sub-branch veterans.
The Sutherland Shire Silver Band led the march from Shaw Street to Memorial Park for the 7am service.
Some family representatives of veterans including children also took part in the march, along with school army cadets and scouts.
Several veterans who were unable to walk were still able to take part, driven in vintage car along the parade route.
They were all applauded by hundreds of Kingsgrove residents who had gathered to watch.
They were met by hundreds in Memorial Park for the service which reflected on the qualities of past generations of Australians who in hardship displayed courage, discipline, self sacrifice, self reliance, resourcefulness and friendship.
The message of the service was that Anzac Day is not to celebrate but rather to remember those who have served our country during conflict and crisis.
Earlier this month, the club held its Anzac Commemoration Service involving the participation of students from 12 St George schools.
“By engaging children in their understandings about the traditions, facts and history of ANZAC Day, the real-life stories of sacrifice, heroism and mate ship of everyday Australians and New Zealanders continues to live on,” a club spokesperson said.
