Is there a more beautiful setting in Sutherland Shire for an Anzac Day dawn service than Woronora?
The war memorial sits in a secluded bushland setting at the end of the road, across from the river and next to the RSL Club.
As the dawn service proceeded this morning, the air was filled with the noise of birds welcoming the new day.
More than 1000 people attended the service, which is growing in popularity each year.
RSL Sub-branch secretary Lindsay Patterson said the numbers started to increase with the centenary of Anzac.
”We also had about 200-250 attend our commemoration on Saturday,” he said.
Two special features have been introduced at the Woronora service.
At one point, a trench whistle pierced the air, reminding those present of the signal diggers received to “go over the top”. Many would never make it back.
The whistle caused a flurry among the white cockatoos.
The other feature was at the end of the service, when 10 doves were released.
The doves appeared reluctant to leave when they were given their freedom, but eventually took flight.
The organising team for the dawn service included RSL Sub-branch president Barry Grant, vice president Jack Donnelly and Mr Patterson.
