Kogarah Library and Service Centre is set get a new roof after Georges River Council accepted a tender for $298,948 from Murphy’s Remedial Builders for the works.
The new roof will signal the start of the upgrade to modernise the library which now houses the council’s customer service centre in Kogarah.
The roof regularly leaks during heavy rain.
In 2016, staff had to place buckets in the foyer exhibition area after heavy rain came through gaps in the foyer roof.
Most were left underneath the solar panels that make up most of the foyer roof.
“The existing roof has been in need of an upgrade for a long time,” Georges River Council mayor Kevin Greene said.
“With significant leaks in the roof interfering with the experience of customers to the Library, Council will completely replace the roof to and ensure the leaks stop."
Councillor Greene highlighted that other enhancements scheduled for the Library and Service Centre will include a redesign and refurbished Customer Service Centre and self-service kiosks.
“As a key customer service hub in Kogarah, it is important Council can properly meet the needs for customers that visit and provide the service that they are after,” he said.
“The newly refurbished Customer Service Centre within the Library will provide a more accessible place for residents to access the services they require.”
“The library space will also be redesigned, which will include a fantastic refurbished foyer area and exhibition space where the community can enjoy comfortable seating and a coffee cart,” he added.
Funding from the project comes from the NSW Government’s Stronger Communities Fund, with Council allocating $1.5 million to its Customer Service Hubs Project.
Works will commence in May and are expected to be completed late August.
