The tidal flow on a section of Princes Highway at Blakehurst will be removed under road widening plans.
Roads and Maritime Services has released plans to widen the highway between James Street and south of Torrens Street.
The work will end the tidal flow arrangement, which provides an extra lane north or south during the morning and afternoon peak at the expense of motorists travelling in the opposite direction.
Road widening will include acquiring a strip of land on the southern verge of Todd Park and strips of residential and commercial properties.
A spokeswoman for RMS said the proposed improvements would provide motorists with a permanent solution for congestion along this section of the highway by providing an additional lane.
“More than 80,000 vehicles use this section of the Princes Highway each day so it is important to ensure traffic flow is improved for all road users,” she said.
The result would be four northbound lanes and three southbound lanes.
“New medians would also be built along the Princes Highway and traffic lights upgraded at the Torrens, Water and Bunyala streets intersections,” she said.
“New signalised pedestrian crossings would also be installed at these busy intersections.”
The spokeswoman said access from the Princes Highway into Torrens and Church streets would also be realigned to accommodate road widening.
“The existing northbound bus stop on the Princes Highway would also be moved from south of Church Street to next to the Church Street car park.
“Some parking would also be removed on Torrens Street and some land acquired to allow the Princes Highway to be widened.
“Existing street lights, utilities, signage and drainage would also be upgraded and relocated as part of the improvements.”
“The community and motorists will be kept informed as the project progresses.”
