Wings Over Illawarra is one of the biggest air shows in the country.
Conditions were absolutely perfect for the 2018 event at Albion Park on the weekend and the crowds voted with their feet.
About 30,000 attended the two-day event with those in the know singing its praises.
“First time visit and very impressed. Been to plenty of historic airshows here and in Blighty and to me this was the best I've seen in Australia and better than nearly all the British ones,” one commentator said on the Wings Over Illawarra Facebook page on Sunday night.
“I know I say this every year.... but BEST air show ever!!! Love everything about it, it’s the highlight of my year,” another said.
Constant activity in the air from dozens of rare and specialised planes kept aviation lovers looking sky-high for most of the day, while on the ground, punters were able to get up close and personal with helicopters, war planes and the ever-popular Qantas Boeing 747.
The Albion Park venue provides the perfect venue for an airshow, allowing for plenty of space and variety.
The escarpment provides a unique and magical backdrop for the aerial action, which is literally non-stop across both days.
The continued growth and success of the event depends on the support of hundreds of volunteers – a fair sprinkling of which come from the Sutherland Shire and are members of the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society.
