One of Australia’s most experienced rose exhibitors will be the speaker at the Shire’s newest gardening club.
Rosalie Vine has won many awards for her roses, including Grand Champion at Sydney’s Royal Easter Show, and will be the guest speaker at the inaugural meeting of the Southern Sydney Rose Society on Saturday, May 19 at Loftus Community Hall.
“We are excited that such an experienced rose grower and exhibitor as Rosalie will be our club’s first speaker,” president Lyndall Turner said.
“The club was only formed early this month, and to have someone of Rosalie’s knowledge and experienced as our first speaker is very exciting for us.”
Ms Vine is president of the Macarthur Rose Society and lives at Campbelltown. She has exhibited her prize-winning roses throughout NSW and in other states of Australia.
The new club has already planned a program of monthly meetings. In July there will be a talk on soil and preparation for rose planting. There will be pruning demonstrations in August and a rose growing workshop in September.
Ms Turner said although there were many gardening clubs in the Shire, this was the first dealing exclusively with roses.
“We see our role as complementary to existing clubs and an opportunity for people to learn more about roses and share their knowledge and expertise,” she said.
The club will meet on the third Saturday of each month from 1pm in Loftus Community Hall, 119-129 Loftus Road, Loftus.
“If you have no roses, one rose or 100 roses you will find the talk by Rosalie Vine of interest,” Ms Turner said.
“Membership of the group will also bring many benefits. One is that we are part of the Rose Society of NSW, which means that as well as learning more about rose growing, we will be able to obtain fertilisers and other gardening products at greatly reduced prices, as well as having access to a wide range of experts.”
Ms Turner said they were fortunate to have access to the magnificent rose gardens at Woronora and there had already been discussions about working together.
